Bulgaria is a country with an extensive history, as in the 6th Century, the Slavic tribes came to settle in this region which, at the time was known as Tracia. In the 7th Century, the Bulgarian hordes went and integrated themselves into that population, forming the first Bulgarian settlement, forming the origins for the country.

Through this settlement and through other historic moments, Bulgaria was converted into an important European power during the 10th century, facing even the great Byzantine Empire for control of the Balkans. This ended in bringing Bulgaria to its knees, and it wasn't reestablished until the 12th century, when it once again became a European power.

During the 12th, 13th, 14th and 14th centuries, the region lived under constant diplomatic crisis, under tension, with invasions and conflicts with the Tartars, Byzantines, Serbians, Greeks, Hungarians... and at the beginning of the 15th Century, Bulgaria was overpowered by the Ottoman Empire.

Since then and up until the 19th century, until 1878, Bulgaria had not recovered its independence. In this year it was converted into an independent kingdom and an autonomous principality. Its definitive independence arrived during the first years of the 20th century, when the country became involved in the Balkan Wars.

It was a curious episode in the history of Bulgaria during WWII. The country allied itself with a band of Nazi-fascists, but in 1941 it changed sides and allied itself with the allied forces. After the war, and approximately during the next 40 years, communism was the way of government in the country, until 1990, when democracy was installed in the country, leaving bhind the Popular Communist Republic.

In 2004, Bulgaria entered in NATO and in 2007 into the European Union. Today it is a model country for the EU, and has numerous cultural destinations to visit.
